Christmas Lights

What a joy it was to see so many familiar faces at our annual Christmas program last Friday! Whenever Christmas carols are sung, Christmas sweaters are donned, and Christmas lights are aglow, many of us fully embrace the cheerful, warm spirit of the season as we look forward to celebrating the birth of our Savior with those whom we love.

As I was taking in the hard work of our students and staff at the program while enjoying the Christmas decorations adorning the stage, I was reminded of the ultimate Light of the World -- Jesus Christ. There is so much confusion today regarding spiritual beliefs and practices, the status of gender, and political viewpoints and stances. What a relief to be reminded, during this season especially, that Jesus came over 2,000 years ago as the Light of the World that provided salvation and direction for all men!

Jeremiah 31:34b-35 reads,

"...for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for the light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name:"

Not only was Christ the Light of the World when He was born in a manger in Bethlehem, he also continues to be the faithful Light today that will provide direction and bring joy! The above text and context acts as proof of God's faithfulness to Israel. As long as the sun, moon, and stars hung in the sky, the Lord would not cast away His people.

Notice as well how He promised "a light by day" and a "light by night." This eternal light cannot be extinguished! Each of us has faced difficulties and testings this year....yet God remains faithful...as our celebration should reflect this season.

So, as we unwind the lights from the attic, turn on the light up snowman, and attempt to find that one squirrelly bulb that is broken--causing the whole strand not to work--remember that God is the faithful Light that continues to burn in the hearts of believers...guiding, loving, and directing us each step of the way.
